GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND RELIEF The island of Rab is lying in the south part of the Kvarner island chain. The Kamenjak massive with its highest peak is the area of the island's highest elevation. Its cliffs plunge abruptly into the waters of the Velebit Channel and serve as a natural shield from the cold north winds. The shoreline has a number of  beaches and one of the most beautiful is the largest sandy beach in Lopar, a real mecca in the summer months for the thousand visitors. The sea around Rab is scattered with small islands and atolls whose many inlets, bays and coves contribute greatly to the irresistable charm of this verdant isle.	AN HISTORICAL OVERVIEW The history of Rab is long and rich. In the age of 10 b.c. the Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus made on ordinary Roman settlement into a Roman municipality and gave it a communal independence that lasts even today. Arbe, Arbiana, Arbia are just few names of the Roman municipality called also 'Felix' (lucky). This special appreciation brought many privileges that made the island of Rab the most attractive Mediterranean island.
